On March 6, 2000, anti-riot police were called in to bust the ongoing strike of the unionized Social Security doctors and health care workers in El Salvador.

The police stormed the Hospital Medico Quirurgico (surgery hospital in San Salvador) and shot canisters of tear gas into the emergency room where patients were being treated. At least three have reportedly died as a result of tear gas inhalation.
