Border Blasters: Exploring the Airwaves of the TJ/SD Border

The Border Blasters exhibition delves into the impact of radio, television, and music along the Tijuana/San Diego border region. Curated by Diana Benavídez, Bill Perrine, and Itza Vilaboy, this exhibition brings together artists from both sides of the border to explore how sound and visuals transcend physical boundaries.

Many of us first encountered the border region through the airwaves—radio signals, television broadcasts—that crossed borders more easily than people. Border Blasters creates space to reflect on the unique cultural history shaped by those transmissions and their continuing influence today. The exhibition features installations by Baja and San Diego-based artists, presenting sound and visual works that examine the ways in which the airwaves have connected, and continue to connect, people from both sides.

Exhibition Details:

  • San Diego, Bonita Museum: July 12 – August 17, 2024
    Reception: Saturday, July 13, 5 – 8pm

QUADRA: Shaping Space Through Sound

As part of the Border Blasters exhibition, I’m presenting QUADRA, a conceptual sound art piece exploring the manipulation of sonic space through synthesis and phase cancellation. By drawing on these techniques, QUADRA creates an auditory environment that mimics the behavior of a moiré pattern—intersecting and evolving in ways that reshape the perception of sound and space.

QUADRAs FRONTERAs invites active participation. Through an interactive control console, visitors can manipulate the sonic landscape, creating a dynamic, shifting soundscape that responds to their input. This is not a passive experience; it’s a space defined by flux, shaped by the interactions of both the system and its participants.

QUADRAs FRONTERAs is an exploration of sound’s ability to redefine and connect spaces in real time, engaging with the broader themes of Border Blasters to reflect on how sound shapes our experience of borders and regions.
