Jamie Loughner is on Day 22 of her hunger strike to save D.C. General Hospital. Jamie Loughner, who also goes by Bork, is a local D.C. anarchist and Homes Not Jails housing activist who is doing the hunger strike to protest the ongoing privatization of D.C. General Hospital.
Bork has vowed to stay on her hunger strike until the Mayor and D.C. Control Board stop the privatization. She has maintained a nonstop vigil in front of the main D.C. government building,
where Mayor Anthony Williams has to walk by her every day.
Mayor Williams and the unelected Control Board are the folks who are leading the privatization effort of D.C. General Hospital. According to the D.C. master
plan, the rich and powerful want to tear down D.C.’s only public hospital and replace it with an exclusive gated "community." The City Council
has fought the privatization effort, but they don’t have much power.
As part of the privatization process, the emergency room at D.C. General has been closed. This
means that the uninsured residents and homeless who would have normally been helped at D.C. General are being shuttled around from private hospital to private hospital.
Several folks have already died in ambulances that were turned away from overwhelmed emergency rooms.
There was a wake this afternoon for the recent victims of the hospital privatization effort. A mock grave was created and several crosses were
erected in the park across the street from One Judiciary Square.
Jamie made the following statement:
"I have grown more and more sure that we can win this essential battle to ensure a continuing, responsive healthier system for the poor…We need to continue to fight by calling Congress and rallying until everyone is covered…This can only be accomplished by a full service, fully funded public hospital. I will continue this fight and so must you."
If you are located outside of D.C. and want to help, please spread the word to comrades, friends, indie media, and the mainstream media.
Stand up for Bork, because she’s just a bit wobbly today.
