indigenous peoples. It can cause serious environmental damage and accelerate the militarization of rural regions like Chiapas in the search for biological riches.
Antonio Perez Mendez, a Tzeltal indigenous traditional healer and herbalist and President of the Council of Traditional Indigenous Doctors and Midwives of Chiapas (COMPITCH) will provide first hand testimony on the adverse impacts of biopiracy on indigenous communities.
Accompanying him will be Ryan Zinn from the Global Exchange Mexico office. Mr. Zinn will discuss the threats to biodiversity and local communities in Mexico with a special focus on the conflict ridden state of Chiapas, and will examine the underlying causes of the conflict in megadiverse countries like Mexico and Colombia.
