Los Ninos del Maiz attack GE Crops at UCSD

San Diego, CA – On Friday, August 25 anti-biotech direct actionists
calling themselves the Ninos del Maiz carried out actions at the
University of California at San Diego (UCSD). The activists destroyed
one acre of genetically modified maize and entered and destroyed the
contents of four greenhouses–containing rice, maize, arabidopsis,
tomatoes, tobacco and other GE lifeforms. The activist’s also
spray-painted messages on the greenhouses and mixed up paper bags
that were being used to collect maize in the field.

A communiqué sent by the activists singled out Robert Schmidt as the
creator of the maize, referring to him as a "bio-imperialist." The communiqué continued "Maize, the third most important food crop
in terms of production, exemplifies the loss of biodiversity on the
earth. Today, a measly 80 plant crops provide 90% of the world’s food
from plants–out of tens of thousands of significantly edible plants
available. Biodiversity is up for sale. Private ownership violates
the very nature of community rights and in the case of genetic
resources/genetic engineering, limits access to collective heritage
to only a few."

Since November 1998 there have been roughly 38 anti-genetic direct
actions in North America and the movement shows no signs of slowing.
In the first week of August a group calling itself the Dusty
Desperadoes destroyed five acres of genetically altered canola in
Dusty, WA. The month of July saw two actions by the Earth Liberation
Front and one by the Concerned Maine Citizens. The direct actionists
maintain that biotechnology is completely unnecessary and is being
developed at the expense of human and ecological health solely to
increase the profits of large multinational corporations.
